VMEA Notes encourages music education professionals to submit manuscripts about all phases of music education in schools and communities, practical instructional techniques, teaching philosophy, and current issues in music teaching and learning.
VMEA Notes is published three times a year. The submission deadlines for article consideration are August 1 for the Fall Issue, November 1 for the Winter Issue, and March 1 for the Spring Issue.
Articles for VMEA Notes are reviewed by practicing professionals who judge manuscripts on their importance, originality, timeliness, scope, accuracy, and style. Articles submitted for publication should be characterized by the following:
Clarity. Articles should be written in a straightforward, conversational style that avoids unnecessary jargon, quotations, and footnotes.
Brevity. Articles should be between 1,500 to 3,000 words long
Usefulness. Articles should address the needs of the many music educators who read the journal.
Originality. Articles should not have been previously published elsewhere.
Research. Ideas presented in articles should be based on solid research. Authors should avoid personal asides that aren't relevant to the primary topic or content that promotes a person, performing group, institution, or product.
Format of submissions. Authors wishing to be published in VMEA Notes should submit their article in the following format:
Typed, double-spaced copies of the article with pages numbered.
A cover letter that includes the author's name, address, daytime phone number, e-mail address and title or position.
A statement that the article is not currently under review by another journal. If any substantial portion of the article has appeared elsewhere, that information should also be included.
Music examples, figures, or other illustrations that are clear and have been checked for accuracy. If any copyrighted illustrations or music are used, documentation verifying that the author has permission to use the material should be included.
Photographs are a welcome part of any submission. We can accept digital photos in TIFF format at 300 dpi resolution (size should be 4" x 5" or larger). For each photograph, submit a sheet keyed to the photograph with the author and photographer's names. A statement certifying that the author has parents' or guardians' permission to publish the likenesses of any minors in the photographs should accompany the submission.
Articles can be submitted electronically or by mail. Please submit articles to:
