Submission Guidelines
VMEA Notes encourages
music education professionals to submit
manuscripts about all phases of music
education in schools and communities,
practical instructional techniques, teaching
philosophy, and current issues in music
teaching and learning.
VMEA
Notes is
published three times a year. The submission
deadlines for article consideration are August 1 for
the Fall Issue, December 1 for the Winter Issue, and
March 1 for the Spring Issue.
Articles for VMEA
Notes are reviewed by practicing
professionals who judge manuscripts on their
importance, originality, timeliness, scope,
accuracy, and style. Articles submitted for
publication should be characterized by the
following:
Clarity. Articles
should be written in a straightforward,
conversational style that avoids unnecessary jargon,
quotations, and footnotes.
Brevity. Articles
should be between 1,500 to 3,000 words long
Usefulness. Articles
should address the needs of the many music educators
who read the journal.
Originality. Articles
should not have been previously published
elsewhere.
Research. Ideas
presented in articles should be based on solid
research. Authors should avoid personal asides that
aren't relevant to the primary topic or content that
promotes a person, performing group, institution, or
product.
Format of submissions. Authors
wishing to be published in VMEA
Notes should submit their article in the
following format:

Typed, double-spaced copies of the article with
pages numbered.

A
cover letter that includes the author's name,
address, daytime phone number, e-mail address
and title or position.

A
statement that the article is not currently
under review by another journal. If any
substantial portion of the article has appeared
elsewhere, that information should also be
included.

Music examples, figures, or other illustrations
that are clear and have been checked for
accuracy. If any copyrighted illustrations or
music are used, documentation verifying that the
author has permission to use the material should
be included.

Photographs are a welcome part of any
submission. We can accept digital photos in TIFF
format at 300 dpi resolution (size should be 4"
x 5" or larger). For each photograph, submit a
sheet keyed to the photograph with the author
and photographer's names. A statement certifying
that the author has parents' or guardians'
permission to publish the likenesses of any
minors in the photographs should accompany the
submission.

Editorial Policy. All
manuscripts accepted for publication are edited to
conform with MEJ style policies, which are based on
The Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.), published by
the University of Chicago Press. Manuscripts may
also be edited to meet the requests of the Editorial
Committee or to fit available space. Edited copy is
mailed to the author for approval before
publication. Final decisions regarding scheduling of
publication, style, title, presentation, grammar,
artwork, and deleted passages remain with the
editor.
